# Chat formatting

> All the chat markup: italic, bold, action, speech, out of character, drop cap, headings, separators, links, mentions, style codes, the color palette and the emoji.

Page: https://docs.rpgdesk.com/en/referencia/formatacao/

The markup works in the room chat, in private conversations, in the `/leave` farewell and in the room’s welcome message. For everyday use, see [Chat](https://docs.rpgdesk.com/en/mesa/chat/#formatting).

## Markup

| You type | It shows |
| ---------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `_italic_` | *italic* |
| `**bold**` or `__bold__` | **bold** |
| `*action*` | ●action●, the character’s action, highlighted |
| `"speech"` | “speech”, with curly quotes |
| `--speech--` | — speech —. Without the closing `--`, the speech runs to the end of the line |
| `((comment))` | 【comment】, out of character |
| `{O}nce upon a time` | the **O** as a large drop cap. Only at the start of the message |
| `# Heading` (up to `######`) | a heading, on a line of its own |
| `---`, `***` or `___` | a separator line, on a line of its own, at the start or after a blank line |
| `https://…` | a link, which opens in another tab |
| `@Luana` | a mention: Luana hears a sound and sees the notice, even with the room in the background |

- `_` in the middle of a word does not become italic: `file_name_here` stays as it is.
- A blank line separates paragraphs; **Shift + Enter** breaks the line.
- Mentions work with the account name and with the nickname in the room.

## Style codes

The codes between `[§` and `]` turn styles on and off in the middle of the text. They are what the message box’s **Bold**, **Italic**, **Underline** and **Text color** buttons write.

| Code | What it does |
| ---------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `[§B]` | turns bold on or off |
| `[§T]` | turns italic on or off |
| `[§U]` | turns underline on or off |
| `[§S]` | turns strikethrough on or off |
| `[§K4]` | changes the text color: a palette number, `#rrggbb` or a color name (`gold`) |
| `[§K4,1]` | changes the text color and the background color |
| `[§K]` | back to the normal colors |
| `[§R]` | swaps the text color with the background’s |
| `[§O]` | turns everything off |
| `[§I https://…]` | shows the image at that address |

The letters can be lowercase (`[§b]`). A code that does not exist stays in the text, as written. For example, `[§B]Watch out:[§B] the bridge is [§K4]falling[§O]` gives “**Watch out:** the bridge is falling”.

## The palette

The numbers for `[§K]`. The **Text color** button offers the first 16 (0 to 15).

## Emoji

The shortcuts become emoji when they stand alone, between spaces. The word shortcuts are in Portuguese, the same in every language.

## What each person sees

In **Settings → Chat → Message formatting**, each person chooses how other people’s markup shows up for them: headings (`#`), separators (`---`), emoji and the drop cap. Whoever turns one off sees the text as it was written.
